Thanks for your help people , you saved me a lot of wasted time & much swearing trying to sort that car out . Instead i went & bought a nice tidy '92 2.0 ghia estate with full leather & a years mot which is a much better base to work with.
The 4wd one was cheap , but had been nothing but a headache since i bought it , & thanks to all your info i didn't spend a fortune & lots of wasted time trying to sort it out.
I'm now going to break it & keep the good bits for my new purchase.
