18.04pm All eyes on Tim Cook, the new Apple chief executive. Its his first product launch since taking over from Steve Jobs. He says its the "privilege of a lifetime" to lead Apple after having worked there for almost 14 years. He's not wearing a black turtle neck jumper.

17.56pm Earlier, Interbrand placed Apple as the biggest riser in its 100-brand report, with the firm's brand value increasing 58% year-on-year to $33.5bn (£21.8bn). However Apple's ranking in tenth place still lags behind rival technology giants Microsoft in third and Google in fourth.

17.51pm TechCrunch is reporting that Apple's Japanese website has leaked the new iPhone 4S will launch on October 14.

17.40pm So, the waiting is over - Apple will announce the next generation of the iPhone at a press event this evening. Speculation appears to be divided over whether the firm will officially announce the iPhone 5, or a new midrange model called the iPhone 4S, or, indeed, both. Regardless, rest assured that something big is coming...

Reports emerged this afternoon that mobile networks have been told to expect two new iPhones and prepare for a shipping date of October 14. It seems the smart money is on this evening's event to reveal an all-new iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S, which will be priced to serve emerging markets and to take on the cheaper Android-powered phones.

Apple is tonight expected to confirm the release date of its new iOS 5 operating system for iPods, iPhones and iPod Touch models.

The firm may also announce details of the European launch of iCloud, a new service enabling users to store their music on remote servers for access anywhere. The service, dubbed "iTunes in the Cloud", was launched in the US in June.

Finally, the much-loved iPod Classic is expected to be discontinued after a decade of housing people's digital music collections. Apple is likely to focus its energies on the next-generation iPod Touch and iPod Nano products going forward. o you can find this blog on digital spy
