Not teaching you to suck eggs lol but did you check all the breather pipes. Obviously the engine was running with a lot of pressure to pop out the dipstick... or maybe that was just coincidence? I would personally not have taken the head off just yet, but as you have studabear is prob right, maybe time for rebuild. I would pop sump off too and check for conjealed oil and the condition of filter. good luck
