Sorry having re-read the post I got confused, I was referring to the OE setup, so as you were

Exactly, but the OP seems to think this is wrong, the original relay's output (87) is used to trigger the new relay (86). This is the 'done' way and is perfectly safe.

Where as at the moment as Phil says, an ignition live will not be cut in the event of accident etc.
