could also be a cracked block. happens a lot, especially if people don't clean all of the oil out of the head bolt holes and then stick a bolt down and tighten it up so the oil in the bottom of the hole has nowhere to go under massive pressure excpet crack the block to relieve it. whilst you have the head off, check very carefully for this.
