You are actually local to me as i am also in essex but I don't know anything about buying or looking after cats.

They are easy to look after, all the wife does with my 2 is feed them wet food in the morning and fill up the dry food bowl, make sure they have water and that's it really, they just sleep most of the day and come for strokes every now and then. then fuck off at night until the morning when they want feeding
the hardest part is when they a kittens, all they want to do is play all day every day. but its nothing on the scale of having a good size puppy.
