I know when I had the dreaded L6 on mine that when me numpty mate got the phase out that it over fueled big time, so assuming your reg has gone dead, and is not restricting flow as it's designed to do to keep pressure in the system(fuel rail), then clamping puts pressure back, more fuel = starting, same as overfuelling as if the phase was out or disconnected.
