I would hope they would not be dumb enough to write in a reference that your following the contract that you were offered by them somehow implied you were at fault?
Same as if they were paying you £100,000 and referenced with 'oh he's landed us in the shit on this salary because it's too much for us'. Employer is in the best bargaining position when offering someone a job on the whole. They gave you 4 weeks notice because they wanted to know they could get shot of you in a month if they fancied and they knew full well that you could also leave in a month. If they did not want that they could have set the contract out totally differently.

Clearly they are throwing their toys out of their pram because you won't do what they want despite never having agreed to do it and them never asking you to agree to it.

I presume no consultation period and no warning of this change as per your above words?
In any event, do you need a reference to return to the place who you already worked for if they approached you? On a more practical note, maybe.
