For starters it only has one coolant temperature sensor, which gives its signal to the ecu, the ecu then gives an output to the gauge.
That sensor ou have pictured is the under bonnet air temperature sensor, as the focus bay is quite cramped if it starts getting toasty under the bonnet then the cooling fans will come on.
It should be cable tied (that is the way ford did it) to the side of the battery box.
