You check for fuel at the fuel rail, on a car of your age I would guess it has a shraeder valve, same as a tyre valve in looks/operation on the rail somewhere, this is for checking the rail pressure, if you press the centre in, as though you were letting air out of a tyre, fuel should come out UNDER pressure, so wrap a rag around the screwdriver you use to push the valve in, it's stings seriously in your eyes!!
Can you hear the pump prime when you switch the ignition on ?, has the fuel cut out switch tripped ?
