i wouldnt personally but if you do make sure u weld a plate behind it, what we did with my mates was to weld a plate on behind the hole, then weld a smaller bit in the hole so its the same level as the metal on the bootlid then fill the gap with weld and flat it back, then fill any imperfectiond as this way it wont crack, you will need a solonoid of some sort to release the boot

+1 a solonoid is the nicest way of doing it properly, its a bit of a mess about making it fit but well worth it in the end. saves you climbing over the seats every time to pull a cord lol
Im sure some of the mk3 xr2i's have 1 in them. you may be able to use the switch too
