Wouldnt a tired fuel filter result in a lack of power/fueling all the time though rather than just when the engine is cold?

It's not the best looked after car in the world in all honesty. He's not got much money so it hasnt had regular services or anything, but to be fair to the old thing, it's never broken down either. Just runs like crap for 10 minutes.
