Hi can you help me

i have a cosworth it will start up and run for a little while and then stall as it would if it had ran out of petrol when running the fuel pumps makes a high pitched buzzing noise like it has no petrol and is getting hot this pump has been sitting with no petrol in for a while as the car was being built could it be knackered?
