What single choke are you referring to, there are at least 10 different ones, the VV I would choose over a single choke any day, the VV by it's very nature of being a variable venturi would give best fuel atomisation having the most ideal air speed through it.
The normal problem is the diaphragm splits, but it can easily be checked just removing air filter, cost about £5 to fix and takes 10 minutes.
Pull back the slide in the carb, and let go it should go back smoothly and NOT snap back instantly, if it does snap back the diaphragms gone, for £5 try this first.
