The standard C/L uses two way servos on each door and one for the hatch/boot, the central locking can be controlled via the driver or passenger locks, when you turn the key in the lock it switches one master (I.E driver or passenger depending which lock your operating) thus locking or unlocking the car respectivly as there all connected.
On MK1'S the C/L can only be operated from the drivers door but thats outside the discussion of this thread, these also used solenoid's.
Contary to the above I have never had a problem with the standard system on both our's.
What model do you have as even the basic model MK2's had C/L, I guess yours is an early Saph, I.E circa 1988?
