In "simple" terms why suffer with lack of proper control of the VVT and loss of power/mpg etc when it's not in operation, like on a ms if you don't have to by using a different ecu that can control it 100% perfectly, giving the best of both worlds, like it was intended to do in the first place.

the VVT on the ST170 is an on/off setup anyway
so another ECU wouldent be able to control it any better than MS
