Turns out that the switch is adjustable - it has ridges on the side which allows the switch to be held in place and moved. So all I had to do in the end was move the switch one knotch and the brakes now work!

I had planed to put a rubber mount on the brake pedal (one from the bottom of a computer, or laptop) but didn't need to!
