dont know about an 05 and american variants, but i changed the filter on my 2000 1.6 zetec and even though a little awkward it was a piece of cake and a hell of a lot cheaper than getting some grease monkey that will charge you £45(uk)an hour. you can get filters on ebay cheap, just get the rear of the car up on axle stands and find the filter by the fuel tank. the most awkward things to undo was the clips that hold the fuel lines, but once off its just a case of getting a socket with a long extension bar to get at the bracket that hold the filter to the body.
just remember to relieve the pressure in the lines by isolating the fuel pump(fuse out), then running the car until it runs out, but watch your eyes because there might still be a bit left when you split the hoses.
