I completely disagree about temps around that area being high even under and especially under race use, from what I have seen and measured on a track car under race(series) use.

Once you go above a T3, you really need to modify the airbox as Pete describes

. It would be interesting to see the flow data with these mods.
What track car have you access to?
Regarding the heat issues, if you look on the works rally cars, they even attempt to reflect the radiated heat from the exhaust manifold with heat reflective tape stuck to the airbox, so even they consider it an issue
