Default Clock/s problem

Hi all,

will have to bear with me on this one:

Nine years ago my 1990 erst went into a garage
for a few bits and what I thought was an overheating problem.
Turned out the temp gauge was goosed which they proved by sticking
in a pre 88 sets of clocks (with about double the real mileage on).

Car lay and thought no more about it till it went in for an mot which
had 96000 miles on it and it turned out the fuel gauge in the old style
clocks didn't work.

Put a supposedly working temp gauge from a used set of
90 spec clocks into my original clocks and they don't seem right.
Another two sets of 90 spec clocks bought and tried and I'm no further
forward given the tossers in the garage thought it had ran out of fuel
when it was near full (as I found out when it poured over my feet),
the used clocks are unknown quantities and all have had needles of
for swapping bits or white dials.

original 90 spec with a used(possibly dicky temp gauge)
- fuel gauge goes backwards and temp goes to the red and drops
when ignition turnd off

set 1 90 spec which supposedly are sound
- fuel gauge goes backwards and temp rises to the black

set 2 90 spec - temp gauge dubious
fuel gauge goes backwards and temp goes to halfway.

Since everything seems fine coming from the blue multi plug,
I'm wondering if they have moved a couple of wires in the white multipug
behind the clock.

Can anyone tell me definitively if the wiring layout is different for
pre 90 spec clocks and 90 spec
or if anyone has a 90 spec
car in bits take a photo or give me a run down
on the wiring layout.
I've identified most of the wires from the haynes manual but
tracing the pre 90 and 90 spec tracks behind the clocks for continuity
has me wondering if one or two wires are out of place.

Even if I drain the tank and then fill it to the top to reclibrate the fuel
gauge, I fail to see how the needles being on wrong would cause them to go backwards.

Sorry for this being so long but it's a real pi--er given it taken me
a month to fix all the garages cock ups and get the car starting and
running.
