You always bring this up, as if it somehow the phone's biggest flaw. What have you got against MMSing, or Emailing? They serve exactly the same purpose!
It is a BIG flaw especiallly when you consider all other phones can do it !
I suspect its more like a future sales gimmick as they run out of ideas of a new version of the iphone every year and all you suckers buy one !
I seem to remember things that apple recently claimed/implied only they can do over the last few years.....

MMS Picture messages
Video Calling
The last one being an advert on TV saying "ONLY ON IPHONE"
You say ... Why not use email and mms ? ... well I quite often take pictures and want to send them to another phone but dont want to pay for it or have no signal and bluetooth is a convenient transfer method that apple typically added restrictions on an system that was intended to be open and FREE to use !
