I have read on MEG (which exists under a new name now) where people time and time again have fucked up thier injectors in a similar way.

Agreed - TDCI injectors are properly sensitive and I wouldn't want to chuck random additives through them.
If it's smoking and not much power check there's not a split in the hose that runs between the EGR and the intercooler. Also get a new fuel filter in there (fill the filter housing with diesel after you've fitted it otherwise it'll never start).
