maybe the "used to be 4x4 " may be a clue.. is it possible the wiring loom and ECU are from the 4x4 and the throttle position sensor fitted on the throttle body is a 2wd one?
This would make for some fairly uncivilised behaviour, as the 2wd TPS is incompatible with the 4x4 management..
