Would be better in a box, with a sealed lid and a breather to vent any gasses down through floor and out car.
If I were doing it it would be a battery box without a doubt, unless it is a sealed battery in which case it would still be a box for safety, there's a lot of energy there to go wrong in the event of a mishap.
