NO they can be totally reliable, unfortunately a lot have been through hands of bodge artists or people, who couldn't/afford to maintain them.
I would check the gasket between the turbo and the drain pipe on it, if leaking around here it will dribble down the whole pipe on the outside.

It was leaking from here previously, and replaced the gasket. Im gonna remove the engine and and sell the rest of the car,as I only bought it for the engine in the first place. Then I can get a better look at it and replace anything that needs fixing while its out.
