and chaffe you are correct but from what he has said it sounds like its trying to run to much boost without being chipped and the ecu has a boost cut which is what would cause like a flat spot and a bang from the exhaust... so i would say it realy needs a set up to be right and the best mod to do to a mfi car is simple a tune up as they go out of tune after awhile even as standard.
10 psi is standard ecu ignition cut, set it at nine and it will go fine, base ignition timing is 15 deg with vac off at 850 to 900 rpm (if memory serves correct its been a while) providing there are no boost leaks or ignition faults it will be as good as it can be without chipping it.
