In the end went for hammering a socket over the nut did the trick for me.
Had mine removed today using one of these. Piece of piss. Previous owner lost the key so had a new set of lock nuts fitted. They were on way too tight as well. No need for them to be gunned down...only supposed to be on as a lock nut, not a physical securing nut. That's how the lock key tangs break off in the first place.
