My xr4i had a seperate hatch release, but my mk1 2.0GL operated from both front doors, pretty sure, I would look around the drivers kick panel area to find where the wires from the alarm for the lock unlock pulse have been joined into loom from door, after checking fuse if both lock unlock don't work.
