In most engines, the vacuum suction should be constant between 16 and 22 inches. Lower the reading usually means a loss of vacuum, but may also indicate a pressure problem (as in connected to a catalytic converter), the worn valve guides or valve springs weak. Vacuum gradually decreases, while the engine is idling is nearly always the exhaust restriction. Oscillating vacuum reading usually indicates leaking valve or worn valve guides.
