What was the oil level like Ginge? I was chatting to my mate about this earlier and he really really knows his shit with Subaru's and he says that 3rd gear goes because it doesn't get properly coated with oil and he always overfils gearboxes to give 3rd gear the best chance.

He also says it's a lottery with 5 speed boxes, he had one go at little power on low mileage that hadn't been abused but he has been working on a type R that has a 2.5 engine with 380lbft on the standard box and although it's noisy it's hanging on. 6 speed boxes are very strong but they cost a lot of money for what they are, you have to allow about £2k for the box, diff etc.
