Totally agree,took me about a week on my mk3 golf but I did have to rub the entire car down by hand with wet&dry 1500 and fuck me my arms were throbbing at the end,but not the way you are thinking!!!invest in a buffer fella,had mine about 6 years and use it nearly everyday,Clarke one,keeps on going through thick and thin,had to renew the cable a few times but nothing major,cost about £70 then I bought a Velcro backplate with a compound head and polishing head,tub of compound job done.
