Yes it does work fine, so long as you don't try to record anything whilst the DVD playing.

I connected it up this way for my sister till she got a new tv for xmas (DVD plugged into video using scart lead, then video into TV using aerial lead) and as long as the DVD player isn't being told something is recording then it plays fine
