Default Vista users, Task Manager issue...

I'm sorting a laptop out for a friend, it was running slowly and is chock full of crap. I've made alot of progress with it and have also run CCleaner and Avast Anti-Virus.

I can't access the Task Manager. I've not ever really used Vista (this short experience has convinced me that I don't want it on my PC!!), obviously on XP, you press CTRL/ALT/DEL and select it. If I right-click on the Taskbar, there is a Task Manager option, but it doesn't appear to do anything when you click on it.

I have read about it being 'greyed out', which is when Task Manager is deactivated, but this isn't the case here. It is an 'available' menu option, it just doesn't do anything.

I am not entirely convinced its not virus related, but can't find anything specifically in terms of how to resolve it, above what I have already done.

Any ideas??
