also does it matter whether the piston at tdc is on what would have been the comp stoke or the zorst stoke as i have no way of telling which is which, just set it at tdc
set the engine to tdc , now turn it (the crankshaft) backwards you should be seeing the exhaust valve start opening on no4, now rotate the crankshaft forward (correct rotation) to tdc and keep going just past, now exst valve should have completely shut on no4 and inlet should be opening on no4, wind the c/shaft back to tdc and you are now on the top of compression stroke on no1 i.e ready to fire
mark pulley with a bit of white paint , shove a timing light in number one plug lead and check to see if its firing on number one when its supposed to be
if you have all the timing marks lined up correctly, you have fuel and ignition and it lights it at the right time, even if you have next to no compression it will fire and run(albeit roughly)
