Well....you never know what may happen - I'm sure if you got smacked by a piston going x mph I'm sure there's a possibly you might crack! LOL! Not saying its happened but you've got to explore every possibility!!!

Yeah....compression stroke sounds about right - you sure you turned the engine the correct way when you timed her up??

I had a similar problem once when I rebuild one of my engines - the car would run on all cylinders but VERY VERY badly - would hardly rev up. I changed every possible ancillary - fuel reg, MAP sensor, ECU etc etc - turned out to be that the timing was 1 tooth out!!!!
