i was led to believe that it's down to the fact that most tubular manifolds are made with thin wall steel, i.e 1.5mm thick or so. this means that they are inherently weak and with heat added they become prone to stress cracking. iirc the runners need to be made from 3mm thick steel to avoid this occuring.
