Go over the the block and head faces with a flat edge and a set of feeler gagues. You need to check each square inch. So place the edge vertically and see if you can get a feeler gauge underneath at any point. Then move the edge an inch to the side and do the same until you have done it right across the head. Pay particular attention between the bores. Then do the same put with the edge horizontally.
