1990 Ford Escort RS Turbo Custom – Another one on offer from my collection.

This is an advertisement for a 1990 Escort RS Turbo in radiant red. I didn’t think I would be doing this given that I replaced my 16i for this as my daily car. Its has been used as such, even through the recent snow!! (:eek) It has been faultless during this time, starting on the button every morning.

I have since found accommodation for it during the winter months owing to a new family car (women always get their way eventually!)
Having checked on her only today, it sits washed and polished under a cover. In closing the garage door, I am reluctantly offering her to a good home only If not sold, my old man will be using it to attend shows.

The car is a full custom model which includes a factory fitted slide and tilt sunroof, central locking, heated front screen (unused since replaced with new!) and optional fuel computer.
The car has covered approx 120k going by the service history and MOTs. However, the original clocks were changed to diagnose a gauge reading fault and again by myself to a set purchased from this site incorporating an ACT guage

The car has a documented/photographic restoration to the body and majority of running gear to factory spec. I believe all the panels remain original as the spot welds and stamps are indicative of this.

My contribution to the car has been to return the car to standard spec/condition -
the only modifications to the car are listed below which I consider are in keeping with the character of the car.

Original features include:
• One Key fits all (inc. fuel cap)
• Corrello Front fog driving lights
• Brand new spot light brackets
• 15” Series 2 alloy wheels (spare with Goodyear NCT50 – OEM tyre)
• Original Ford Boost & Ancillary hoses sourced Ford jubilee clips.
• Period Ford mudflaps front and rear
• Period Ford rubber mats, front and rear
• Period and correct model standard radio for the car
• Ford dealership number plates
Optional items:
• *optional x4 Goodyear NCT OEM tyres*
• *optional genuine Ford Headlight protectors*

History:
The vehicle was registered 15th May 1990 and maintains all its floor numbers. The car is supplied with a clear HPI certificate which I did at the point of purchase. The car comes with history including past receipts, all Ford operator guides inc. audio equipment. There are also a number of MOT certificates and a VSIB certificate for insurance purposes. The previous owner is a member of the RSOC and im sure will verify any queries if I am unable to.

The car still maintains its Ford door locks (not a fan of delocked doors) with the original key including the petrol cap!

Engine/Turbo/Gearbox:
Both the engine and gearbox are standard and in excellent working order. I cleaned and refitted most engine components back in November 2009 before the car came on the road for my use. I wanted it 100% reliable, therefore had gaskets, water pump, timing belt etc replaced.
The head was/is very clean, testament to the frequent servicing during its life time. I had a minor issue with pressure in the system, resulting in a breather pipe popping off every now and then, since rectified with a new breather! At the same time I did a HC test which was all fine. Oil, filters and plugs changed also at this point, all of which was approx 150 miles ago. It can be a little tappy on occasion if I were to be critical, but I have a brand new set of tappets ready to fit.

Whilst previously running stage 1 boost pressure, I have now restored it to standard, although the AB chip remains

With the above in mind, the engine can only be described as good, totally standard and very responsive! With my driving style :saythat: and use of the vehicle (70 miles a day), I have consistently been returning 34mpg plus!

The gearbox is excellent, replaced due to syncro failure. Clutch replaced at this time. Linkage is very nice too, very positive and precise gear change (no crunching in reverse!

The turbo I replaced when stripped down with one rebuilt with new seals. No shaft play at all – boosts nicely

Suspension:
Replacement Spax shock absorbers with standard ride height springs. Has benefitted from some polybushes. I have recently purchased replacement bottom arms, bushes etc – just to be picky and have all new!

Otherwise handles beautifully - Was a pleasure as an everyday car!

Exhaust:
Choice of three!
1. Standard mild steel pipe
2. Magnex 4”
3. Mongoose ( I have this currently on the car with Magnex center section which pushes the pipe out further from the bumper, thus preventing heat damage

Interior: (Pics to come)
The interior is standard zolda 90 spec - excellent with no rips or tears in the recaro trim. All bolsters are intact and firm – always protected with seat covers. Door cards are decent – has some common sagging (may have another set in the loft!)

I have sourced an original steering wheel for that standard look.

On the downside, it has a period security fitting which locked onto the gear knob, secured on the floor via the centre console. This had been cut to fit but have sourced a replacement item. Also had an ‘vector’ type immobiliser removed from along side the drivers side vent – annoying but easily covered (i.e. with a badge or something) if required.
Also has original and uncut parcel shelf

In Car Entertainment:
Period Ford radio, uprated but standard sized speakers.

Exterior: * Please note front bumper realigned since photos!*

The car has been restored professionally some years ago with a photographic record available on CD-ROM.

The car now benefits from a full re-paint (kit removed) in original radiant red. Im really picky about paint finish and in the context of the cars age and its use, its very nice! Quality of re-spray overall is very good in my opinion. However, the bonnet has suffered a scratch on the corner of the bonnet which I am tempted to touch up as it’s not all that noticeable. – me being picky again im sure but I can see under certain lights some preparation marks. Will let the photo’s judge!

I have applied a fresh decal set to complement the engine bay and awaiting a new VIN plate to complement.

The battery tray & fuse box were repaired/replaced and treated during its restoration work and to an acceptable standard, looking as Ford intended. I stripped all the bulkhead/inner wings for inspection, a polish, wax and coat of clear wax oil before re-assembly. No water leaks!

The doors and panels are free from rust with the exception of a small bubble on the rear quarter meeting the boot lid and a few pin size on the roof, but the camera was as picky as I in picking it up for you to see. Arches are excellent as are rear quarter drain sections.

Car has been refitted with original Ford amber indicators and side repeaters.

I have spent considerable time restoring/maintaining the paintwork with quality products such as Maguires, Poorboys etc, which now compliments how straight the body work is.

The finish is excellent and as such, I certainly will be proud to take to shows. The attention from road users is frequent and very positive!

Underside:
As is common on these vehicles, it has had welding . However, as this was completed to a high standard, so should not re-occur and cause issues in the future. The underside of the car has been rust proofed and treated to ensure this is the case. The MOT inspector was complimentary to past work and present condition (did not require welding this year). Floors are excellent with carpets removed for inspection as pictured:

Brakes:
Factory Standard rears with black painted drums – drilled and grooved on the front

Wheels:
Factory Standard original spec – Showing a few minor marks now but still very presentable. Tyres are all good, will replacing fronts nearing limit with continentals for the sale.

Security:

Cat 1 Toad

I like to be as accurate as I can be in my descriptions so I trust that whilst this vehicle is not to concourse standard, it will interest genuine enthusiasts such as myself and those wanting a vehicle to show for the forthcoming show season. The new owner I am looking for will appreciate the vehicle for what it is and the potential it has as with the history and condition

I trust that following the depth of this advertisement, viewers will appreciate that I have been as honest as I can. The opinions are mine and will appreciate those whose views would differ, but in context of the vehicle age, condition and its previous daily use, not to mention how I value it! Im sure I have missed out bits, please feel free to ask anyway!

The car was MOT’d in Feb IIRC and tax remaining until May.

Photographs are fairly recent – not today as the weather isn’t good enough
Asking price is £2950 (will consider pt/ex).

I can provide an alternate spec if required – i.e. Pace intercooler, samco hoses etc.

Would appreciate some feedback on this, particularly with the asking price.
