When I did mine I got bad info off the DVLA they told me to have the owner at the time mark it as scrapped, luckily he didn't as I had to take it to Newbury to be checked I was informed that I should just apply for the log book.

Once I had that I just had to get the engine number changed and that was pretty painless.
