You are correct about the start the only reason we use the bend is to save on the clutch with a full bore launch. Saw Mike Rainbird set a Rwd record back in the day from a standing start

that and the drivetrain, id imagine launching off down the straight in alot of 4wd cars would put alot of strain on there gearboxes, if you coming out of the corner in third gear id imagine the strain would be less than launching hard in 1st
