Default your thoughts please on good MPG and pleasant to drive cars?

as above really got alot of miles to drive at the mo and as i'm starting up on my own the petrol prices are going to cripple me, i want something thats big enough to be comfortable (i'm 6'5" btw) diesel, maybe turbo'D, and not boring to fuck to drive (within reason), preferable ok to look at too .

double edit: oh yea and looking for something under the 1k mark.

but the MPG and being a reliable work horse are the main things i'm looking at tbh

i wanted a e34ish 525tds but i just don't think it'll be practical enough.

hopefully it'll give me the extra cash to start that mondeo RWD project i'v been setting my mind too

so thought and opinions would be grately appreciated

edit: i'v spoken to alot of taxi drivers on the way to piss up's and nearly all of them say they can't beat a pug 406 so thats my only thoughts atm
