What if I dont have XP

Fitted a slave, which is now recognised in device manager, but not in "my computer". It's not been asigned a drive letter yet. Im a bit worried about doing fdisk or format on it incase it messes up my current C: drive. How will it know which one I am needing to format if it does not have a letter ??????

Im confused by the simplest of tasks today lol...
Win 98 too btw
