Are these different to the old type in resistance (saturated coil ? )

Stu did explain to me the difference a while back but beer has destroyed too many brain cells since.

If they are the easier type to drive does anyone have a cheap secondhand set for my turbo bike project as the old Bosch ones need resistors adding to get them to work?
