DVD drives on computers are also locked to region, and only have a limited amount of times you can change that region
But a program called "AnyDVD" will override this region lock and allow you to use discs locked to other regions. It runs as a background process.
Added to that, DVDShrink, which is a DVD reauthoring tool, and completely legal, will allow you to re-author any DVD and the output DVD will be region free. However, you will still need AnyDVD running in the background if you want to reauthor a DVD that is of a different region to that of your DVD drive.
I bought a copy of Terminator 2 that is region 1, and my DVD player is Region 2 locked, so I used AnyDVD to bypass my DVD drive's region lock in the computer, then reauthored the DVD to a region free version so I can play it. Perfectly legal as I own the source disc
