Default repairing a hole in stud wall

This giving up smoking lark isn't all it's cracked up to be!

Last night i got a strop on over something completely trivial and put my fist through one side of a stud wall between the bathroom and dining room.

Obviously i now have to repair it, but the question is, how?
I really don't fancy chopping the plasterboard back to the wooden beams/noggins and putting a fresh bit in then having it re-skimmed, so could i get a piece of hardboard or similar, cut it into a couple of pieces (i.e. so it can fit through the fist sized hole) then use countersunk screws to fix the hardboard to the inside of the plasterboard and fill on top of that?
