Reason being is the company doesn't keep that money - they have to give it to the insurance company. So the Insurance company pays, say, £40 for an Escort screen to the fitting company, the fitting company take £50 off the customer and send it to the insurance company. If they swallowed it, they'd still only get £40 off the ins company, and STILL have to send the ins company £50, so they would end up a tenner down. Not gonna happen is it...
Crap, the company I use for every joe public, swalow the excess where possible, they do this by claiming the max cost allowed under the insurance policy, which can be much higher than the cost of the screen, company dependant.
In the past 15 years or so I have only ever had to pay £15 towards a heated bronze with blue top tint, and that was due to the limit of the insurer being so low.
