Well if chris has got any pics of the end of the downpipe youl see theres probably a trick bit of piping that sticks out of the downpipe and into the turbo exhaust housing to make a "wall" to seperate the wastegate port from the exhaust wheel outlet.
If there was nothing to seperate it, exhaust wheel exhaust gas would be coming out the screamer at idle too and itd be a right old shit sounding row.
Benefits of a screamer are mainly when the main exhaust is restrictive (ie all 3" exhausts over 500bhp etc), and the car is boosting in a way a lot of exhaust gas is exiting thru the wastegate, so the screamer is a seperate pipe for some exhaust gas, which stops the restriction partly or totally.
Depending on turbo spec n power, you might find almost nothing comes out the wastegate at high rpm anyhow, so its not nececerily a perfect solution to a restrictive exhaust on all cars anyhow.
