Yes its illegal, anything over 750kg must be braked.

And lets also not forget the Category B+E (if passed post 1997) needed on your licence to tow anything over 750 anyway.

They are only "legal" as a recovery/get me home item.

I think also there are issues over the car still being a 'car' and not a trailer. In other words the saph would need to be fully taxed, insured and MOT'd.

For the sake of £30-40 id hire a car trailer for the weekend (again asuming you have B+E on your driving licence)
