Have you taken the door card off to look inside the door? You will see two rods, one from the handle and one from the lock, the one from the handle is the one that is probably causing the problem.

Definately agree with the above on the spring issue, my lad had to change the spring in his twice in 6 months because they are that fragile.
Fiddly job but just take your time.
Is it possible to change just the spring?
