if you close the gaps down you'll get a bit more lift in the valves, but too much and you can end up with valve to piston contact, but you may get more performance.
you could open the gaps up a tad and let more oil to the top of the valve which may cussion the tapping a little more.

it could be a bit of wear in the rocker shaft assembly though.
